Can encryption be turned on in the SYSIBM.USERNAMES table for the password column?

Question & Answer

Question

I understand that DB2® has the capability to encrypt table columns. Can this encryption be turned on in the SYSIBM.USERNAMES table for the password column? Because this table is a catalog table, will the encryption interfere with the operation of the database?

Answer

DB2's built-in column encryption function cannot be used for the SYSIBM.USERNAMES password column. The DB2-supplied SYSPROC.DSNLEUSR stored procedure provides the capability to store the authorization ID and password in encrypted form in the SYSIBM.USERNAMES table. For more information about the SYSPROC.DSNLEUSR stored procedure, see http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSEPEK_12.0.0/sqlref/src/tpc/db2z_sp_admindsnleusr.html
