About "Invalid server idle from unknown child pid=###" warnings

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote explains what the warning, Invalid server idle from unknown child pid=###, means when seen in the logs on Windows®, UNIX® and Linux®.

Symptom

The following warnings may be seen from time to time in the ClearCase albd logs or in the Application Event viewer logs on Windows:

Warning: Albd(336): Warning: Invalid server idle from unknown child pid=###

or similarly

Warning: Albd(336): Warning: Invalid server busy from unknown child pid=###

Cause

The ClearCase Atria Location Broker Daemon (ALBD) process keeps track of all its child processes, which periodically and "on demand" report their busy or idle status back to the ALBD by way of an RPC packet sent to its UDP port. The packet includes data to identify the sender, including process ID.

These messages are logged when the ALBD receives such a message and does not recognize the process id of the sender as matching a child process that it started.

The most common cause of this happening is that ClearCase ALBD has been stopped and restarted. Child processes that were started by the "old" ALBD process receive a shutdown notification after finishing their current task, as well as sending notification that they have completed their tasks. Sometimes by the time the current task is completed, the "old" ALBD process has completely stopped and the "new" ALBD has started and opened the UDP port 371. When this new ALBD receives the status message it does not recognize the child process.

It is also possible that the ALBD receives a status message that was sent from a different host.

This would tend to indicate a bad networking configuration on the remote host, but would not cause any problem on the host where the message is logged.

Resolving The Problem

These warning messages can safely be ignored.

For more information on the albd_server or any of the LCearCase server processes, refer to IBM Rational ClearCase Administrator's Guide > ClearCase Server Processes. If you do not have a hard copy, the document is available in soft copy, cc_admin.pdf, on any host with Rational ClearCase installed, and is located by default in:

  • Windows: C:\Program Files\Rational\ClearCase\doc\books.
  • UNIX and Linux: /opt/rational/clearcase/doc/books
