Error description

  • Attempts to transfer using an Extensible Markup Language (XML)
    file of a Simulation Ready diagram to another Encyclopedia
    results in 'no duration values... does not reference' error in
    IBM Rational System Architect (SA).

    CONFIGURATION
    Environment = Microsoft Windows (R)
    Tool = Rational System Architect (R)
    Version = 11.4.2.4
    Add-on = SA Simulator III

    SYMPTOM
    The Simulation does not run.
    In the 'SA Simulator Report' window the full error message is:
    Simple process - Process
    - simple resource does not reference a resource
    - Definition '24/7' of type 'Shift' has no duration values
      set-Simple Start event-Event
      Definition 'sim object' of type 'Object' does not reference
      any arrival time.

    STEPS TO REPRODUCE
    1) Create a Simulation Ready diagram.

    2) Run an XML export of the Simulation Ready diagram.

    3) Run an XML import in a new Encyclopedia of the file
       created at Step #2.

    4) Run the Simulation in the new Encyclopedia.

    CAUSE
    The parameters referred to in the SYMPTOM are missing from the
    XML file created by SA.

    WORKAROUNDS
    To transfer a Simulation Ready diagram to another Encyclopedia
    you can either:

    * Use the menu:
      'Tools ? Collaboration ? Merge... / Extract'
      To launch a facility to transfer the diagram between
      Encyclopedias.

    Or,

    * Make a backup of the Encyclopedia in SA Encyclopedia
      Manager (SAEM). You can restore that as another
      Encyclopedia name.

    NOTE
    If you cannot use either of workarounds and use XML to transfer
    the Simulation Ready diagram then you can attempt to fully
    resolve the 'no duration values... does not reference' error by
    setting one or more of the following parameters after the
    transfer:

    * Resource Allocation: Resource
    * Resource Availability: Role
    * Resource Availability: Shift
    * Shift: Duration
    * Simulation: Arrival Profile
    * Process: Busy

    The complete list of parameters is dependent on your diagram
    model.

    Items referencing items selected to be exported or their
    subordinates are not included for export.

    Symbols and their definitions are imported but not related.

Problem conclusion

  • A new option 'Include related items and subordinates' which
    can be used in conjunction with existing selections has been
    provided. The purpose is to allow items which reference
    items in the list produced by the use of the existing check
    boxes to be included along with their subordinates. Such
    items would not have been included by using the existing
    subordinate options because these follow outgoing
    relationships.
    Exporting the example diagram using the renamed 'Diagrams,
    child diagrams and subordinate definitions' option along
    with the 'Include related items and subordinates' option
    causes the missing definition to be included and when
    imported into a new encyclopedia this results in a model
    that is valid for simulation.

    Imported symbols are now related with the imported
    definitions where appropriate.
