Error description

  • Abstract:

Attempts to install the extension after selecting 'Enable
Useragent Switching' in the mobile browser simulator results in
    an error from Chrome.

    Problem:

When you enter the URL for the mobile browser simulator page
into Chrome, and then select 'Enable Useragent Switching', you
get a popup that tells you to install an extension. After
selecting the URL, Chrome pops up a message stating you can only
install Extensions from their Chrome store.

    Local fix:

Because of a change in how Chrome handles extensions, you must
now manually install the extension. The steps to do this are:

    1) Paste your URL into Chrome.
    2) From the Chrome browser, select the 'Customize and control
Google Chrome' icon in the top right corner (it's a square with
    3 horizontal lines on it).
    3) From the 'Customize and control Google Chrome' menu select
Tools ? Extensions. This will open a new tab.
    4) Again from the 'Customize and control Google Chrome' menu
select Downloads. This will again open a new tab.
    5) From the Downloads tab select the 'Open downloads folder'
link on the right side. This will open your File Explorer.
    6) From your File Explorer, drag/drop the
'mbsuseragent@rational.ibm.com.crx' file to the main section of
the Extensions tab (ie. some where in the middle of the page.
If you drag/drop to the tab itself you will still be told you
have to use the Chrome store).
    7) You can then 'Add' the extension from the pop-up.

After the 8.5 was released, Google made a change to the
policy for Chrome extensions. Extensions could be
automatically installed only if they are in the Chrome Web
Store. Since the user agent switching Chrome extension is
not in the Chrome Web Store, an error message is returned by
    Chrome.

Problem conclusion

  • In 8.5.1 the user interface is changed to provide
instructions to the user on how to manually install the
Mobile Browser Simulator user agent switching extension. For
8.5, users should follow these same steps, which are
detailed in the APAR Error Description.

The fix for this APAR is included in Rational Application
    Developer v8.5.1.
