  Instrumenting a non-generated function was previously done
  by replacing the contents of the function with a new
  function, which contains the original contents of the
  function and some additional function invocations for
  tracing.  When replacing the contents of the original
  function, the regular expression searching being used caused
  a problem if the users function contained specific
  characters.
  

Problem conclusion

• We have changed how a non-generated function is
  instrumented, and are now no longer using regular
  expressions.  Instead, the original function is wrapped with
  a new function, which does the instrumenting instead of
  replacing the contents of the original function.
