APAR status
Closed as program error.
Error description
The installation process for IBM HTTP Server V8.5 completes with a warning message. Although the product installation is complete, one of the post-install configuration actions encounters an error. The action is unable to set the hostname in the IBM HTTP Server configuration files. When the warning message occurs, it will direct you to read the "postinstall.log" file from the IHS_HOME/logs/install directory. One important detail in this log file is that this line will appear: -SERVER_NAME = There will be no value after the equals sign. This log file will direct you to read another log file, named "postinstallerConfigActions###.log", where ### is a long number. This log will show that a program named "postinst" is called, with several parameters. Below the call to that program, the log file will show: Result: 1 That result of "1" indicates an error. This log file will also show the following details: CallPostinst.ant:27: CALLPOSTINST_RETURN_CODE=1 The reason for these errors is because the "SERVERNAME=" parameter passed to the "postinst" program has no value.
Local fix
The issue which triggers the warning message can be avoided by making sure the operating system's hostname is configured before running the installation program. One way of doing this is to use a configuration program associated with that operating system to set the hostname, such as using the "YaST" program on SUSE Linux. Once the system's hostname is set, you can uninstall and reinstall the product.
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Users of IBM HTTP Server suffering from a * * failed installation. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The installer allows some required * * fields to be passed as empty arguments * * to installation scripts, causing * * installation to fail. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** If installation fails and no specific errors are visible in the postinstallerConfigActionsNNNNNNNNNNN.log, it's likely that a null or empty SERVER_NAME or HTTP_PORT was passed to the post- install scripts, which results in an invalid command line.
Problem conclusion
The installation scripts were modified to trap empty or missing required parameters and throw specific error messages before proceeding. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 8.0.0.6 and 8.5.0.2.
