Error description

  • APAR Error Description:
Abstract: Attempts to start Rational Developer for System Z
version 8.0.3 and 7.6.2.1 result in missing z/OS connection
    filters and error
    org.eclipse.core.runtime.internal.adaptor.EclipseLazyStarter$Ter
    minatingClassNotFoundException
    on z/OS Project view
Problem: After starting RDz, z/OS Projects view shows the error
    org.eclipse.core.runtime.internal.adaptor.EclipseLazyStarter$Ter
    minatingClassNotFoundException.
The Remote System Explorer view show missing filters under the
    z/OS connection.

The client .metadata\.log shows the root cause of the error:
    Caused by: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

    Local fix:
This error has been seen when the file named "properties" within
    <workspace>\.metadata\.plugins\com.ibm.ftt.resources.core\
is too big like more than 100Mb.

A workaround is to delete this file and to restart RDz.

Local fix

Problem summary

  • This problem is caused by our setting many persistent properties
on each dataset in the model and having no mechanism to clean up
expired entries. Many of the properties do not need to be set
because they have been moved to property groups.

Problem conclusion

  • The fix will have several components:1) Avoid the out of memory
error by checking the file size of the properties file before
trying to load it. If it is greater than a specified size (e.g.
10 MB) we will discard the file. This is in effect the
workaround we have asked users to do manually.2) For existing
properties files that are small enough to load, "scrub" them by
removing all the entries which have been migrated to property
groups. This reduces the size of the file by over 95%.

When new datasets are populated in the model, only
save the non-property group properties in the properties file.
This eliminates the need to continually scrub the file. There
does not seem to be a way to determine which datasets are
    eligible to be removed.
The problem listed in this APAR has been resolved with
IBM Rational Developer for System z V7.6.2.4 Fix Pack which
is available from the Recommended Fixes support download page:
