  convertUnsignedUnicodeNumToNumber).

  When one Unicode field is assigned or compared to another,
  EGL Java programs create a Java String object. This may be
  inefficient.
  

Problem conclusion

• EGL avoids making String objects when possible.
  Improvements were made in these areas: assignments,
  comparisons, set-empty, and the four "UnicodeNum" functions
  in SysLib.
  
  The lkb1f program from the customer runs 46% faster than
  before on the test machine.  (One change was made: we added
  replace=YES for the output file, so the file I/O effort
  would be the same for every run.)
  
  The lkb1f program mostly uses unicode variables.  Additional
  tests were written that use other datatypes.  These show 17%
  to 22% improvement in the cases that could be improved, and
  no performance regression in the cases that could not be
  improved.
