Error description
Rational Developer for System z V7.6.2: PL/I annotations can be disabled using the PL/I Annotations preference page. If Disable annotations is selected, the PL/I real-time parser is still parsing the file unnecessarily. One of the symptoms of this problem is when the PL/I real-time syntax check parser detects a large number of errors, it uses up the Java stack memory causing and Internal Error popup dialog to be displayed with the following text: An internal error occurred while showing an internal error. You are recommended to exit the workbench. Subsequent errors may happen and my terminate the workbench without warning. See the .log for more details. Do you want to exit the workbench?' Another error dialog is also displayed showing the following message: An internal error occurred during: "Pl/I annotations and tools"'. The .log shows: !MESSAGE An internal error occurred during: "PL/I annotations and tools". !STACK 0 java.lang.StackOverflowError at lpg.runtime.ConfigurationStack.findOrInsertStack(Unknown Source) at lpg.runtime.ConfigurationStack.push(Unknown Source) at lpg.runtime.DiagnoseParser.parseCheck(Unknown Source) at lpg.runtime.DiagnoseParser.checkPrimaryDistance(Unknown Source) at lpg.runtime.DiagnoseParser.primaryPhase(Unknown Source) at lpg.runtime.DiagnoseParser.errorRecovery(Unknown Source) at lpg.runtime.DiagnoseParser.diagnoseEntry(Unknown Source) at lpg.runtime.DiagnoseParser.diagnose(Unknown Source) at com.ibm.systemz.pl1.editor.core.parser.Pl1Parser.parser(Unknown Source) at com.ibm.systemz.pl1.editor.core.parser.Pl1ParseController.pars e( Unknown Source) at com.ibm.systemz.pli.editor.lpex.parser.ParseJob.run(Unknown Source) at org.eclipse.core.internal.jobs.Worker.run(Unknown Source) One possible workaround to the stack overflow error is to add the -vmargs -Xss512k to the arguments when starting up Rational Developer for System z.

Problem summary
USERS AFFECTED: RD/z users who disable PL/I annotations. **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: In the PL/I Annotations preference page, users can disable the annotations provided by the PL/I real-time syntax check feature. If this option was chosen, the annotations did not appear; however, the PL/I program was still parsed by the real-time syntax parser.
Problem conclusion
PROBLEM RESOLUTION: RD/z does not parse the program when the user disables PL/I annotations.
