Error description

  • The first line of comment text in a JavaScript file generated by
the 'Create a Dojo Widget' wizard is corrupted and cannot be
recovered when using Japanese locale and the workbench encoding
is not set to UTF-8. If the corrupted line is not deleted, it
prevents saving the JavaScript file later.

    ?Recreation steps?
    1. Install the Japanese language from the Installation Manager
and start Rational Application Developer with -nl ja option from
command prompt to get Japanese menus.
    2. Create a new 2.5 dynamic Web project named 'Test' targeted to
    WebSphere Application Server 7.0
    3. Change configuration to install the Dojo tools facet and
    accept the defaults
    4. Create a new Dojo widget [New] ? [Web] ? [Dojo Widget]

[Copy the information from the tutorial in Tutorials ? Web ?
    Create a Web 2.0 application with Dojo ? Lesson 7: Create a
    custom Dojo widget]
    Module Name = widgets
    Widget Name = RateAndComment
    Source Folder = /Test/WebContent/dojo

    5. Click Finish

When you finish the creation wizard, RateAndComments.js will
open in the editor. The opening comment is corrupted.

    6. Delete a space, add it back, and then you cannot save the
JavaScript file unless you delete the first line comment. The
error in Japanese Windows says that part of the content could
not be mapped to MS932 encoding (Japanese Windows default).

    ?Expected?
If you start Rational Application Developer in English you get
normal behavior with a comment called:
// dojo.provide allows pages to use all of the types declared in
    this resource.

    ?Actual?
Starting Rational Application Developer in Japanese causes
generation of the JavaScript file to corrupt the comment text.

    ****************************************************************
An incorrect workspace encoding of JavaScript files while in
a Japanese locale can cause the first line comment to be
    corrupted.

Problem conclusion

  • Ensure that the workbench encoding preferences are set to
UTF-8 which is able to handle Japanese characters.

Changes to Rational Application Developer have been made for
version 8.0.2 to not corrupt the first line comment.
