Error description
Description ----------- Reverse engineering Ada source files using the Ada Reverse Engin eering tool. If error messages are displayed within the tool's p rogress window during an Ada reverse engineering activity, those error messages do not get included within the log file correspo nding to that reverse engineering activity. 1) A screen shot of Reverse Engineering Progress Window from a c ode importation activity showing an error message; 2) the log file from the same activity (and which contains all o f the information that the 'Progress Window' contains and in the same order, except for the error message) - the error message s imply does not seem to have been written to the log). customer coment : --------------------- In our opinion, the entry of error messages into a log file is a fundamental requirement for logging. This is because the log f ile is the only permanent record of the progress of the activity that was being logged. If the activity fails due to errors, th e log file is the location where the error messages can be expec ted to be examined off-line. Indeed, it is only when errors hav e occurred that a log file will ordinarily need to be examined. If the error messages are not placed in the log file then the lo g file is not a complete record of the progress of the activity being logged. Furthermore, since it cannot be used for the off- line examination of error messages the log file serves little us eful purpose. The placing of error messages into the log file should therefore have a much higher priority for implementation than a simple re quest for a future enhancement for the development team to consi der.
