PM12414: 304 RESPONSE HANDLING FOR UNCACHED RESOURCES

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Resources that are not cached by the resource server module
  always return a 200 response code even when the resource hasn't
  changed since the if-mofified-since date of the request.
  Resources greater than the size specified by the
  resourceserver.maxCacheObjectSize configuration parameter (300KB
  by default) will not be cached and therefore never return a 304
  response.
  

Local fix

Problem summary

• 304 response handling uses the cached time to check if the
  resource has changed since the last request. Since large
  resources are not cached there is no date to check if a 304
  response is suitable so a 200 response code is returned every
  time.
  

Problem conclusion

• An additional check against the component's last modified date
  was added for uncached resources which allows for a 304
  response.
