Renaming a java classes using the refactoring with 'update refer ences' cause an exception

Problem summary
When performing a Refactor-Rename operation on a Java compilation unit, a NullPointerException or ClassCastException is logged. A messages is displayed to the user saying that a refactoring participant was disabled. This did not prevent the refactoring from continuing, but did present an extra, possibly annoying, dialog each time they performed this refactoring.
