Error description

  • This APAR will add custom properties to allow the connection
sharing to be controlled . The custom properties will be set
on the pool manager for a datasource or connection factory

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of WebSphere Application Server *
    *                  who use J2C connection pooling              *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Allow control of connection sharing *
    * use connection pool custom property *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
Currently customers who are using direct lookups have no
ability to request unshared connections. This APAR will offer
a custom property that can be set on the connection pool of
a paritcular connection factory or datasource ,that will
    control connection sharing.

Currently there is no way for customers to globally set a
datasource connection type. For example customers might want a
particular datasource to only use unshared connections
regardless of what the resource reference settings are. This
APAR will provide this functionality to customers.

Problem conclusion

  • To use this feature, create a new custom property on the
connection pool, for the Datasource.or Connection Factory.

For Example: From the Administrative Console , navigate to the
following path: JDBC providers > DB2 Universal JDBC Driver
Provider > Data sources > DB2 Universal JDBC Driver DataSource
    > Connection pools > Custom Properties

The property can be created by clicking new button

    The following 2 properties available.:
NOTE: All names and values are case sensitive.

    NAME Possible Values
    globalConnectionTypeOverride shared / unshared

    defaultConnectionTypeOverride shared / unshared

The defaultConnectionTypeOverride will only change the default
sharing value for the connection pool. This property is
intended to allow control over connection sharing for direct
look-ups. If resource references are configured for this
datasource/connection factory they will take precedence over
this property and the resource ref settings will be used.
For example: if an application is doing direct look-ups and
unshared connections are desired set this property to unshared.

The globalConnectionTypeOverride will have precedence over all
other connection sharing settings. For example if you set
this property to unshared all connection requests will be
unshared, both direct look-ups and resource reference lookups.
The intended use for this property is to offer a quick way
to test what the consequences would be of moving all
connections for a particular datasoure/connection factory to
unshared or shared. Currently the only was to achieve this
with out this property is to change the resource reference
setting in all the application?s deployment descriptors. In
some environments there could be several different
applications that use a particular datasource/connection
    factory. Using the globalConnectionTypeOverride customer
can move between shared and unshared connections for a
particular datasource/connection factory with out having to
    change any resource references.

If both the defaultConnectionTypeOverride and the
    globalConnectionTypeOverride are set only the
globalConnectionTypeOverride value will be used to determine
    connection sharing type..

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix packs 6.0.2.35, 6.1.0.23 . 7.0.0.3 Please refer to the
