Error description

  • Using Rational Application Developer V7.0.0.5, when a user creat
es an operation that uses an xsd type and then deletes the opera
tion, the WSDL editor leaves behind an unused import that it ins
    erted.

Local fix

Problem summary

  • The WSDL and XSD editors were not providing function to remove
unused XSD imports added by other user or editor actions.
Typical actions that can cause unused imports are: adding a new
operation and changing one of the parameter's type to reference
a type from an imported schema or simply adding the import by
hand when in source editing mode.

An XSD import is unused when no WSDL or XSD component references
    components from the imported schema.

In addition, the warning message generated by the XSD and WSDL
validators when encountering an unused XSD import was not very
helpful. The message would always read "The location 'Test.xsd'
has not been resolved" instead of clearly stating why the schema
    was not resolved.

Problem conclusion

  • Rational Application Developer V7.0.0.8 provides a new action
that will allow the user to remove unused XSD imports from both
WSDL and XSD documents. The action can be invoked through the
Source->Remove Unused Imports menu. The new menu is available in
the context menu invoked by right-clicking on a WSDL or XSD file
in the project explorer or in the WSDL and XSD editors when the
editor is in source editing mode.

In addition, the actual message produced by the WSDL and XSD
validators has been improved to clearly mark an XSD import as
unused. The new message generated for unused XSD imports will
read: "The import with location 'Test.xsd.' is never used."
