Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL V5.2 running *
    * programs that contain INSPECT TALLYING ALL *
    *                 X'00' statements that inspect large (4000+   *
    * character) data items, compiled with *
    *                 ARCH(11) or higher.                          *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: INSPECT TALLYING returns an incorrect *
    *                      count.                                  *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF. *
    ****************************************************************
    The code generated to take advantage of new ARCH(11) vector
    instructions requires special handling for large data items and
    when tallying X'00'. The two special cases interacted poorly.

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler was fixed to generate correct code when both
    special cases are in effect.

Temporary fix
