Error description

  • At OPT(1/2), a level 88 item with thousands of entries defined
    as PIC 9 can lead to excessive zoned comparisons resulting in a
    performance degradation.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL V5.2 compiling *
    *                 programs with packed-decimal data items      *
    * with a large amount of level 88 values. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: An IF clause checking a level 88 data *
    * item with a large amount of values *
    * causes the compiler to generate a *
    * large internal representation of the *
    * program which causes compilation time *
    *                      to increase.                            *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF. *
    ****************************************************************
    A level 88 check expands into IF statements on each level 88
    value. A very large amount of level 88 values generates a very
    large amount of IF statements which generates very large
    internal representation of the program.

Problem conclusion

  • The internal representation of level 88 checks for
    packed-decimal types was compacted to simplify the program's
    internal representation.
