Error description
ICMP packets not handled correctly by the Load Balancer for IPv4 and IPV6.
Local fix
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: IBM WebSphere Application Server Load * * Balancer for IPv4 and IPv6 users * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Ping requests to the Load Balancer for * * IPv4 and IPv6 may fail. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** ICMP pings to the cluster or return address of the Load Balancer for IPv4 and IPv6 may time out.
Problem conclusion
The Load Balancer for IPv4 and IPv6 forwards ICMP pings for the cluster address to the servers defined on that cluster. If servers are defined with NAT forwarding, the load balancer can not forward the request because ICMP packets do not contain a port number which is necessary for the load balancer to correlate the server connection with the client connection. The code has been corrected so that the load balancer will generate the ping response if a NAT server is chosen for forwarding or if the ping request is to a return address. This affects the Load Balancer for IPv4 and IPv6 only. Fix levels: 8.5.5.13 and 9.0.0.5
