Error description

  • The degree of index parallelism is calculated too conservative
with unload/reload parallelism and SORTDATA NO. DB2 calculates
the degree of parallelism based on doing data sorts, however
the REORG was run with SORTDATA NO. DB2 should not assume
memory needed for large data sorts and rather spend most of
the memory and assign it ot the index sorts

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All DB2 11 for z/OS REORG utility users      *
    * using SORTDATA NO on partitioned table *
    * spaces with many indexes *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The degree of index sort parallelism *
    * may not be optimal when REORG unload/ *
    * reload parallelism for partitions is *
    * in effect with SORTDATA NO processing *
    * and a large number of indexes are *
    * defined. This could have a negative *
    * effect on elapsed time. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply corrective PTF when available *
    ****************************************************************
REORG reserved memory resources for parallel data sorts which
caused less memory to be assigned to parallel index sorts which
could degrade the possible degree of index sort parallelism.

Problem conclusion

  • Code has been changed to correctly calculate needed memory
resources when using SORTDATA NO with unload/reload parallelism.
