When an error is detected, the customer program jumps (using GO
TO) to a section which calls an exit program that stops the
run. This program never returns. However, the compiler has no
way of knowing that the exit program never returns. The
INITCHECK analysis must therefore consider control flow paths
that fall through the section that calls the exit program. This
gives the appearance that PERFORM statements exist in the
program which can call themselves recursively. Code already
existed in the compiler to handle such cases. However, that
code did not properly handle a corner case that occurred while
    compiling this program.

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler was modified to handle the failing corner case.
