Error description

  • Intermittently a problem occurs where a Gateway daemon does not
    reconnect to IPIC connected CICS servers after the CICS servers
    have been restarted.

    The following messages might also be written to the CICS TG log:
    CTG8495E Communication failure for IPIC connection to CICS
             server <server_name> reason = java.io.IOException: End
             of stream
    CTG8433E Connection failure for IPIC connection to CICS server
             <server_name> reason =  java.net.Connect Exception:
             EDC8128I Connection refused

Local fix

  • Restarting the Gateway daemon clears the problem.

Problem summary

  • ***************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: *
    * All users of CICS Transaction Gateway and IPIC connected *
    * CICS servers. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: *
    * IPIC sessions deadlocked and message IEE342I issued after *
    * SDSF modify command. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: *
    ****************************************************************
    When CICS TG closes a number of IPIC sessions at the same time.
    It is possible for 2 sessions to deadlock on the same resource.
    In this deadlock one of the sessions can be holding a CICS TG
    statistics record while waiting for the deadlocked resource. If
    the CICS TG ZOSConsole thread then attempts to collect
    statistics it can also become deadlocked and issue the message
    IEE342I. Any further attempts to use CICS TG administration
    commands from the SDSF console will not complete. The Gateway
    daemon will continue to process ECI requests over IPIC sessions
    that are not affected by the deadlock. It is also possible that
    the IPIC session deadlock will hold statistics resources that
    will prevent scheduled statistics from being collected.
    A javacore dump will show the deadlocked CICS TG threads. A
    region dump of the CICS TG address space might also show the
    ZOSConsole thread in
    com.ibm.ctg.server.statistics.StatController$StatCollector.getSt
    ats.

Problem conclusion

  • CICS TG has been changed to remove the reported deadlock on IPIC
    session closure.
