APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When using reference modification with OPT(2), incorrect output
    is received. In this specific instance, spaces are moved to
    the sending field, which are then moved to the receiving field.

Local fix

  • Compile with OPT(0) or OPT(1)

Problem summary

    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL V5.2 compiling *
    * and running programs that are compiled with *
    * compiler option OPT(2), and where the *
    * programs contain a MOVE of part of a data *
    * item to the beginning of the same data *
    * item, using reference modification, where *
    * the number of bytes moved is less than the *
    * starting position of the first byte to be *
    *                 moved (e.g. MOVE X(7:4) TO X).               *
    *                                                              *

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Incorrect output at runtime: A move of *
    * this form causes the remaining bytes *
    * of the data item to be padded. The *
    * code generator may generate code to *
    * write the padding before the code to *
    * move the data, causing the padding *
    * bytes, not the original data, to be *
    * moved to the first few bytes of the *
    *                      data item.                              *
    *                                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF. *
    *                                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    The compiler was incorrectly moving the code to write the
    padding bytes ahead of the code to move the data.

Problem conclusion

  • The compiler was fixed to not move the code to write the
    padding bytes ahead of the code to move the data.

Temporary fix
