APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • For a VSAM file opened as I-O, an sc03 abend is received. The
    file does receive non-zero File Status codes on the OPEN, READ
    NEXT, and CLOSE - all of which are expected.

Local fix

  • Open the file as Input.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: ABEND at program termination. An SC03 *
    * ABEND is issued at program termination *
    * when a COBOL program OPENs an indexed *

    * I-O mode and the OPEN was unsuccessful *

    *                      and not 97).                            *
    *                                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF. *
    ****************************************************************
    The error handling logic in the OPEN routine did not close all
    alternate indexes ACBs when the OPEN was unsuccessful. During
    program termination, DFSMS detected some ACBs were still in
    OPEN state and issued an ABEND SC03.

Problem conclusion

  • The error handling logic has been corrected to close all the
    ACBs when an unsuccessful OPEN occurs, thus preventing the SC03
    abend at termination. This APAR also fixes an S0C4 abend that
    occurs when trying to OPEN an indexed file with alternate
    indexes that failed to open successfully.
