Error description

  • When MobileFirst server is processing extremely frequent network
    requests, it is also attempting to report all of the analytics
    reports related to these requests. The buffers for analytics
    reporting can fill, forcing the calling thread to process the
    analytics buffer flush, causing an unnecessary throttling of the
    original requests. This appears as a major performance
    degredation to the overall server performance.

    * Customers with extremely high throughput demands on the *
    * MobileFirst server may experience significant performance *
    * degredation as the CPU approaches high percentage usage, and *
    * the network usage is close to saturation. *

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * Internally, a Java threadpool is used to queue up and send *
    * analytics data to the backend MobileFirst Analytics server. *
    * This queue can become full. At that point, the threadpool *
    * policy was set to "caller runs", which was done in order to *
    * best preserve analytics data, and as a mechanism to throttle *
    * the server.                                                  *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    * -                                                            *
    ****************************************************************

Problem conclusion

  • Since the MobileFirst server is more critical to business
    operations than the collection of Analytics data, the policy has
    been changed to "abort" so that when the queue is full, a
    warning is issued in the log, and some analytics data is
    dropped.
