PI47306: HANG IN DB2 SHUTDOWN DUE TO INCORRECT STOP DATABASE COUNTERS

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• DB2 hangs during STOP DB2 shutdown process. The ACOM counter for
  STOP DATABASE commands has incorrect values.

Problem summary

  * USERS AFFECTED: Administrators, stopping DB2 after executing *
  *                 a combination of synchronous STOP DATABASE   *
  *                 commands as batch job (or through IFI) with  *
  *                 parallel execution of AUTO GRECP, dictionary *
  *                 creation or asynchronous STOP DATABASE       *
  *                 commands.                                    *
  ****************************************************************
  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The synchronous execution of the STOP   *
  *                      DATABASE command (if submitted as batch *
  *                      job or via IFI) may have adjusted an    *
  *                      internal counter for synchronization    *
  *                      with STOP DB2 in a way that causes the  *
  *                      STOP DB2 processing to wait infinitely. *
  ****************************************************************
  * RECOMMENDATION: Avoid executing synchronous STOP DATABASE    *
  *                 commands (via batch job or IFI) while being  *
  *                 in AUTO GRECP or while executing parallel    *
  *                 asynchronous STOP DATABASE commands (i.e.    *
  *                 via console).                                *
  ****************************************************************
  A DB2 shutdown may wait until being cancelled for the counter
  that represents running STOP DATABASE and AUTO GRECP tasks to
  become zero. This counter is not maintained correctly.
  

Problem conclusion

• This fix ensures the correct maintenance of the counter that
  tracks the parallel execution of AUTO GRECP and STOP DATABASE
  commands. A scenario, where a DB2 shutdown is waiting for this
  counter to become zero while actually no AUTO GRECP or STOP
  DATABASE tasks are running anymore, is no longer showing.
