Error description

  • Insert processing can be slow and using more CPU time than
expected when inserting into a table of a table space with many
    tables.
The problem also applies to a tablespace with only a few
tables, but with a high amount of create / drop activity.
DB2 incorrectly creates internal control blocks for all the
tables (dropped and existing) in the table space, instead of
just for the table being used.

Local fix

  • Set DSNZPARM PCTFREE_UPD=0 and PCTFREE FOR UPDATE 0 for the
    tablespace

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: PCTFREE_UPD zparm or PCTFREE FOR UPDATE *
    * with -1 value specified can cause *
    *                      excessive CPU usage.                    *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply corrective PTF when available *
    ****************************************************************
PCTFREE_UPDATE zparm or PCTFREE FOR UPDATE with -1 specified
can cause excessive CPU usage during mass inserts on a
multi-table table space with a large number of tables.
Real-time statistics (RTS) was creating some internal control
blocks unnecessarily, causing a performance degradation.

Problem conclusion

  • RTS has been updated to avoid creating extraneous control
    blocks.
