Problem summary

  * USERS AFFECTED:                                              *
  * Developers using MobileFirst Platform Foundation Studio,     *
  * especially on a Mac, may experience very slow embedded       *
  * Liberty application server startup performance.              *
  ****************************************************************
  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
  * The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) on which the embedded Liberty *
  * application server runs in MobileFirst Platform Foundation   *
  * Studio may prefer IPV6 DNS lookup, such that an API call to  *
  * InetAddress.getLocalHost() performs a reverse Domain Name    *
  * Service (DNS) lookup for the IPV6 address.  This DNS lookup  *
  * may take in excess of three seconds per call.  The sum of    *
  * the calls to this API results in very poor startup           *
  * performance of the embedded application server.              *
  ****************************************************************
  * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
  * An immediate workaround is possible by editing the           *
  * /etc/hosts file so that the operating system does not need   *
  * to perform an external DNS lookup.  Simply edit the          *
  * /etc/hosts file so that the IPV6 loopback address maps to    *
  * the hostname of the local machine on which the JVM is        *
  * running.  For example, if the hostname is 'superman', the    *
  * entry in /etc/hosts would be:                                *
  *                                                              *
  * ::1 localhost superman                                       *

Problem conclusion

• Apply the suggested workaround or apply the ifix associated with
  this APAR, which includes code so that calls to
  InetAddress.getLocalHost() are non-blocking.
