Error description

  • (COB V5.1) A multiply by zero may produce an abend0C9 divide by
zero exception at OPT(0). The error received is:
CEE3209S The system detected a fixed-point divide exception
    (System Completion Code=0C9).

An example of code that can produce the abend is:

    COMPUTE WS-AVG-YR2 ROUNDED = WS-AVERAGE * 24
    where WS-AVERAGE = 0.

Local fix

  • Compile program at OPT(1) or OPT(2).

The compiler was using a divide instruction to perform the
rounding operation but the divide was not safe in all
    situations.

Problem conclusion

  • The COBOL compiler was updated to avoid using an unsafe divide
operation during rounding of binary numeric values.
