Error description

  • Attempts to run an IBM Rational Product with a long License
    Variable results "program termination" by the Operating System.

    ADDITONAL DESCRIPTION

    This can affect any IBM Rational Product. So far, this has been
    reported to affect the following:
    IBM Rational Rhapsody
    IBM Rational Publishing Engine

    SYMPTOM

    When you attempt to run the IBM Ratioanl Product, the program
    crashes with the error message '... application has stopped
    responding'.

    Results:

    The IBM Rational Product crashes before loading because
    Microsoft Windows Terminates the applliction.

    Steps to Reproduce:

    1. Install the Rational Product

    2. Set the Environment Variable (depending on Prodcut or
    Operating System this will be eihter LM_LICENSE_FILE or
    TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE) to the path of your license, and add
    additional paths until the length of the Value string is
    greater then 500 characters.

    3. Run the IBM Rational Product.

    CAUSE

    When the IBM Rational Product is waiting on the IBM Rational
    License Key Server to respond. The license variable is too long
    (greater than 500 characters) for IBM Ratioanl License Key
    Server.

    WORKAROUND

    Reduce the number of characters to be less than 500 in your
    Environment Variable (LM_LICENSE_FILE / TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE).

    * USERS AFFECTED:                                              *
    * Users of Rational products that use environment variable *
    * like TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE to point to the license server. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * If the value of environment variable TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE *
    * is longer than 500 characters, then the application using *
    * this environment variable may crash. *
    *                                                              *
    *                                                              *
    * As a workaround, customer can use the value of the *
    * environment variable to shorter than 500 characters. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************

Problem conclusion

  • RLKS 8.1.4.3 client library has the fix for this. Customer can
    now have environment variables with values of any length even
    larger than 500. To avail this fix, the Rational product needs
    to take the 8.1.4.3 licensing library.
