PH19631: IDZ HOVER WINDOW IS UNREADABLE DARK GREY TEXT ON BLACK BACKGROUND

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Users with IBM Developer for z v14.2, v14.1.7, and v14.1.5.
  This problem occurs only on IDZ-linux, not IDZ-windows.
  Preference 'Run/Debug => Compiled Debug => Debug Editors =>
  Allow hover evaluation' is checked.  The contents of the debug
  hover window is unreadable dark grey text on black background,
  see screenshots.
  
  There is no option to change the background/foreground to a more
  readable presentation.
  
  Found a similar problem in PI15270 (for debug v13) (hover window
  is unreadable).
  
  Other situations with a similar effect:
  
  1- RACF error message displayed in the NewDataset dialog.
  In the New Data Set dialog, attempt to use a
  high-level-qualifier for which you are not authorized.  This
  results in a RACF error message, a portion of which shows up in
  the New Data Set panel. When you hover the mouse pointer over
  the message, a balloon opens up with the complete text, but it's
  unreadable (foreground is dark grey, background is black).  The
  real problem is not the RACF rejection, but the invisibility of
  the message -

  2- HostConnectionEmulator properties tab
  In the properties tab for Host Connection Emulator, the panel
  section labeled "Host Security Settings" is light grey text on a
  black background. It's not exactly unreadable, but it's not very
  easy either.
  

Local fix

• - for the debug hover window, press F2 to set the focus, then
  choose "Select All", and then "copy". Now paste it into a text
  editor to read it comfortably.
  
  - for the two secondary problems - set SWT_GTK3=0, i.e. disable
  GTK version 3, and use GTK2 instead
  

Problem summary

• Under dark theme, several places show incorrect color display in
   which the contents are not readable.
  

Problem conclusion

• Host Connection Emulator problem was fixed to display correct
  colors under dark theme. Debug issue is not going to change.
