Error description

  • IBM Developer for z systems 14.1 does not have a simple way
to change Hebrew comments in COBOL Editor.

    The following capabilities are required:
    * Align current line to the right (or to the left)
    * Change text direction (Right-To-Left/Left-To-Right)
    * Allow exclusion of columns (numbering, comments, ...)

Local fix

Problem summary

  • Inline input filed may be invoked from context 'Source' menu or
from context menu that pops up after
Alt+Shift+S hot key combination, or alternatively just by Alt
    plus '=' hot key combination.
Inline input field affords user to write/edit Cobol code file
    without interfering with
left/right numbering areas. The inline field operates, by
default, in ovewrite mode, which can
be switched by pressing "insert' keyboard button.
It preserves caret position between inline input and main editor
area and has the same font as main editor area.
Pressing 'Enter' key commits the changes, 'Escape' key or
shifting focus to another place abandons the changes.

Problem conclusion

  • If Bidi is enabled, the additional functionality is provided as
    follows:
     - in code lines, the editing is 'smart logical' i.e. LRM marks
are inserted on the fly in proper places
in order to prevent Bidi string literals to intermingle with
the rest of the code line content.
LRM marks are inserted the very same way the server does this
    on file download.
     - in comment lines the first asterisk character remains
read-only, the rest of comment line gets opened
     inside inline editor.
The inline editor orientation follows the line content, i.e. if
the first strong character is RTL then inline
editor is opened in RTL mode, otherwise in LTR mode LTR and RTL
    editing mode by pressing CTRL+SHIFT
(left or right combination correspondingly) all like in Windows
system editor. The committed text is saved
exactly as it looks in inline editor.
     - Up/Down arrow keys will commit the change in current field
and move inline editor to that above/below.
