Error description

  • Problem Description:
After TCP/IP recycle, job log is filled with the following
    message:
               ( ... :kdebuwa.c,117,"connection_service")
WARNING: UNABLE TO MAKE AN INTRA-PROCESS TCP
                CONNECTION USING THE LOOPBACK INTFC
IF YOU ARE RUNNING FIREWALL SOFTWARE
IT MAY REQUIRE A CONFIGURATION CHANGE
at a rate of 26 MBytes/hour. This unbounded output fills the
JES spool if not recognized and the address space is not
cancelled in sufficient time. This is a change in behavior
    with UA38911 (FP6IF2).

    Detailed Recreation Procedure:
Defect can be reproduced on z/OS simply by re-cycling TCP/IP
while a ITM610 address space with UA38911 applied is active.

    Related Files and Output:
RKLVLOG of failing address space is filled with msg KDEBUWA

Local fix

  • Circumvention available.

Network Term Notification Facility is a collection of methods
and user exits available to Tivoli Applications which enables
automated termination of these applications after loss of the
    TCP/IP network service.

The Network Term Notification Facility is available exclusively
to Tivoli Application address spaces (using CT/Engine) on z/OS.
A new member must be added to RKANCMD: ENDKLXI (or $ENDKLXI) .
In normal operation, CT Application address spaces remain after
loss of one or more communication subsystems. In some instances,
it is desirable to terminate these address spaces (perhaps
forcing an automated restart) when a communications subsystem
    becomes unavailable.

On termination of TCP/IP, the CT/Engine Operator command,
ENDKLXI, is issued. This results in the execution of CT/Engine
Operator commands found in member ENDKLXI of the
dataset pointed to by RKANCMD for the application address space.
Here is sample content of ENDKLXI which uses CT/Engine operator
    commands "echo" and "shutdown":

echo KLVIN999 TCP/IP SERVICE HAS TERMINATED
      shutdown
      shutdown

With these commands in place in ENDKLXI, the loop on TCP/IP
termination as described in OA24107 can be circumvented by
    terminating the offending address space.

The following message is repeated in the TEMS RAS1 log when
    TCP/IP is re-cycled:
      (...:kdebuwa.c,117,"connection_service") WARNING: UNABLE TO
MAKE AN INTRA-PROCESS TCP CONNECTION USING THE LOOPBACK
INTFC IF YOU ARE RUNNING FIREWALL SOFTWARE IT MAY REQUIRE A
      CONFIGURATION CHANGE
This message repeats until the JES spool is completely filled
or the job is cancelled. This is a change in behavior with
    UA38911 (6.1.0.6-TIV-ITM-IF0002).

Problem conclusion

  • Control for the connection service assumes the service will
always work. This simple assumption is not true in the case
of a TCP/IP restart. The code was changed to provide a
feedback mechanism between the connection service and the
control thread for that service. Now, the connection service
retries a loopback bind or loopback connect failure 3 times
--each with an embedded delay before returning a failure
status to the control thread. This limits the number of
messages resulting from the failure condition to 20 per hour
(as opposed to the original 720 per hour).
Since this error is unrecoverable, customers may wish to
employ a circumvention to terminate the address space when
the problem occurs. This circumvention uses the Network Term
    Notification Facility in ITMS/ENGINE:
1 - Create a member ENDKLXI in the RKANCMD data set.
2 - Include the following ITMS/ENGINE operator commands:
echo KLVIN999 TCP/IP SERVICE HAS TERMINATED
             shutdown
             shutdown
With these commands in place in ENDKLXI, the loop on TCP/IP
termination is circumvented by terminating the address space.
