Error description

  • If you use Java method invocation, either through a service flow
with an external service that has a Java binding or through a
heritage service with a Java Integration that has the Translate
JavaBeans option enabled, and if the invoked Java implementation
returns null, a NullPointerException is thrown and the
corresponding service task fails with an exception, which is
    similar to the following exception:

    Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException
        at
    com.lombardisoftware.component.javaconnector.worker.JavaConnecto
    rWorker.bindOutput(JavaConnectorWorker.java:221)
        at
    com.lombardisoftware.component.javaconnector.worker.JavaConnecto
    rWorker.doJob(JavaConnectorWorker.java:129)
        at
    com.lombardisoftware.component.common.workflow.ExecutionJob.doJo
    b(ExecutionJob.java:549)

The exception might occur after a heritage service with a Java
integration that has the Translate JavaBeans option disabled is
    converted to a service flow.

    PRODUCTS AFFECTED
IBM Business Process Manager (BPM) Advanced
    IBM BPM Standard
    IBM BPM Express
    IBM Business Automation Workflow

Local fix

  • Change the implementation of the Java method so that no null
    values are returned.

Problem summary

  • The conversion of the return value of the Java method to a
Business Automation Workflow variable value fails if the value
    is null.

Problem conclusion

  • A fix that correctly handles null values returned by a Java
implementation to an external service will be included in a
future version of Business Automation Workflow.

Temporary fix
