Error description

  • In the Process Admin Console, you can define multiple values for
an exposed process variable (EPV) in a particular snapshot and
can synchronize EPV values from one snapshot to another. During
synchronization, all EPV values of the source snapshot are
copied to the target snapshot, which might result in a large
amount of EPV values over time. Numerous EPV values negatively
affects performance during run time and while managing EPV
values in the Process Admin Console.

    PRODUCTS AFFECTED
IBM Business Process Manager (BPM) Advanced
    IBM BPM Standard
    IBM BPM Express

Local fix

  • EPV values of a snapshot can be deleted only when the snapshot
is deleted. You must create a snapshot by using the latest EPV
values of the previous snapshot as defaults. Then you must
delete the older snapshots. In the future, you must use EPV
synchronization carefully and only when there are fewer EPV
    values in the source snapshot.

Problem summary

  • Because only EPV values with an effective_on date set to the
future can be deleted in the Process Admin Console, all
historical EPV values remain in the database. Therefore, the
number of EPV values increases over time. This increase depends
on the number of snapshots, the number of EPV values in a
snapshot, and the number of synchronizations between snapshots.
This quantity decreases performance during run time as well as
the performance in the Process Admin Console while you manage
    EPVs.

Problem conclusion

  • A fix will be included in IBM BPM V8.5.7 cumulative fix 2017.03
that provides a command to clean up the EPV values' history.
