Error description

  • When a business condition occurs that triggers an alert email,
that alert email might not be sent if the SMTP server treats the
empty string ("") that is passed for a user ID as a character
that is not null. If an SMTP server does not treat the empty
string as null, the SMTP server interprets that there is a user
ID and requests a password. An empty string is also sent for the
password, which isn't valid behavior. As a result, an
authentication error similar to the following error is written
    to the SystemOut.log file:

    IBM Business Monitor

Local fix

Problem summary

  • When sending an alert email without authentication, Business
Monitor does not consider that an SMTP server might interpret an
empty string as a non-null value. Instead, null values for the
user and password attributes should be specified.

Problem conclusion

  • A fix is available for Business Monitor V8.5.5.0 that allows an
alert email to be sent when you use certain types of SMTP
    servers.
