Error description

  • The Workspace feature in WebSphere Commerce allows users to
operate in a "sandbox" type of environment, making changes in
different workspaces so as not to affect each other. This is
    working as designed.

However, in some cases business users are attempting to create
the same objects in multiple workspaces with the expectation
that the Management Center tools will prevent them from doing
this. If the taskgroups are approved to move to the
production-ready environment, there may be a failure in the
approval process due to the duplicated data.

This problem occurs when the newly created objects have data
that resolves to the same unique index.

Local fix

  • Examine log files and resolve data conflicts manually after task
groups fail approval. This can be done by carefully manually
deleting the conflicting (duplicated) data under the appropriate
     workspace or approved content.

Problem summary

  • USERS AFFECTED:
WebSphere Commerce V7 business users leveraging workspaces and
creating identical content (products, promotions, marketing
    activities, etc.) in multiple workspaces.

    PROBLEM ABSTRACT:
Duplicate business objects (e.g. Catalog entries, Categories,
Attributes) can be created across workspaces leading to
    taskgroup approval failures.

    BUSINESS IMPACT:
Without this fix, customers will need to manually resolve
conflicting data which could be time consuming and error-prone.
Note that this situation arises only when creating the same
    products, etc. in multiple workspaces.

    RECOMMENDATION:

Problem conclusion

  • This fix offers additional options to content administrators to
resolve some data conflicts created across multiple workspaces.
    The options are:
    1. able to report exception during object creation when other
workspaces or approved content has a data conflict and/or
    2. automatically merge conflicting data for created objects
    during workspace approval and/or
    3. automatically delete old conflicting data for created objects
during workspace approval - Risk: data might be deleted from the
approved content during workspace content approval and commit
    processes.
