APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• As the database connections are not explicitly closed, the Java
  garbage collector may not return the free handles to the pool
  fast enough to meet the demands for the next set of database
  connection requests . Under certain situations, such as
  invalidating a large number of products and categories as a
  result of rebuilding the search index,  the database connection
  handles may run out.  When the connections run out, the system
  may appear to hang or slow down as it cannot obtain the
  necessary connection to process traffic.  Error messages
  relating to connecting to the database may also appear in the
  logs.
  

Local fix

• Increase connection pool size so that the chances of exhausting
  the pool is reduced

  The problem may impact WC v7 users, depending on the program
  being run at the time.
  Error messages relating to database connection failure may also
  appear in the system logs.

  Database connection handles are exhausted under heavy
  maintenance workload due to connection handles not being freed
  up fast enough
  
  BUSINESS IMPACT:
  Unable to invalidate a large number of products and categories
  as a result of rebuilding the search index .

Problem conclusion

• This APAR contains the fix in Data Services Layer (DSL) to close
  the database connection explicitly (instead of relying on the
  Java garbage collector to free up the DB connection handle) to
  avoid the timing issue.
