Error description

  • APAR Type: Field
    Approver Initials: AS
    Severity: 2
    Reported Release: 621
    Compid: 5608A41CI Distributed Installer
ABSTRACT: cinfo takes a long time in a non-DNS
    environment
    PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

cinfo (any option) has been found to run very slowly in an
    environment
where DNS is not used for network name resolution. The response
    delay
    varies by OS platform.

    RECREATE INSTRUCTIONS:

    1) Configure a system to not use DNS for network name
    resolution. The
following instructions will work, there are sure to be
    additional
       variants that also work.
       A) For all OS's
/etc/hosts contains all the required IP addresses and host
    names
       B) For all OS's
/etc/resolv.conf contains no entries for DNS servers.
(entries can be commented out instead of deleted)
       C) For AIX:
/etc/netsvc.conf contains a hosts entry which has "local"
    on it
          and "bind" is not present.
       D) For Linux, HP-UX, and Solaris:
/etc/nsswitch.conf contains a hosts entry which has
    "files" on it
          and "dns" is not present.

    2) Install OS agent from ITM 6.2.1 GA level
    3) Change directory to $CANDLEHOME
    4) Run "time bin/cinfo -i"
    5) Upgrade the OS agent to ITM 6.2.1 FP2
    6) Run "time bin/cinfo -i"
    7) Notice the time different required for the command to
    complete.

Local fix

Problem summary

  • The IBM Tivoli Monitoring command cinfo, with any options, has
been found to run very slowly on a UNIX/Linux system
in an environment where DNS is not used for network name
resolution. The response delay varies by OS platform.

Problem conclusion

  • ITMhostName, called by cinfo, has been updated to use only the
command for each platform that supports a non-DNS configuration.
For Linux and Solaris, "getent hosts" is used.
    For HP-UX, "nslookup" is used.
For AIX, "host", without the -n parameter, is used.

The fix for this APAR is included in the following maintenance
    vehicle:
        | fix pack | 6.2.1-TIV-ITM-FP0003
        | fix pack | 6.2.2-TIV-ITM-FP0003
