Error description

  • Communications Server for AIX and Linux, Version 6
    --------------------------------------------------
Communications Server logs messages that indicate a memory
    shortage. For example:
512-63 Not enough memory to activate link.
512-114 Not enough memory to generate link Alert.
512-72 Not enough memory for orderly link deactivation
512-79 Not enough memory to forward Alert
Snaadmin commands return very slowly or not at all or fail with
    error "cannot allocate memory".

Local fix

  • Stop and restart the SNA software.

Problem summary

  • USERS AFFECTED: All

    PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
The server becomes unusable because the kernel buffer usage has
gone beyond the maximum (90%) as reported by the command
"snaadmin query_buffer_availability". Kernel memory usage is
    also elevated.

    PROBLEM SUMMARY:
Following an extended period of waiting for a reconnection to
the mainframe and a window condition, the product can queue up
many thousands of NMVT Alerts which are useed to report the
connectivity failures. These are release if the NMVT PU (the
first link connected) is deactivated at a later time.

Problem conclusion

  • The code has been modified to limit this queue to 128 messages.
This is sufficient for reporting errors, as subsequent events
occurring while messages can not be transmitted would typically
be duplicates of the initial failures. These Alerts correspond
to messages logged in the Communications Server error logs.

Temporary fix
