Error description

  • Approver: JM

    Environment:
Platforms involved: Windows 2008 and Windows Vista.

    Problem Description:
When building the system PATH statement the install code fails
to recognize Windows Vista or Windows 2008 and restricts the
path to 1023 characters instead of 2047 characters. This
failure to recognize the Operating System and the support for
an extended PATH length causes the ITM install to fail when
that length is exceeded with the following message:

PATH environment variable length exceeds the maximum, abort
install. See Microsoft Knowledge Base KB180410, KB906469,
      and KB832978.

APAR IY98134 needs to be updated to include Windows Vista and
      Windows 2008.

    Detailed Recreation Procedure:
      To recreate:
      1. Extent the path on Windows Vista or Windows 2008 past the
1024 limit and attempt to install ITM. It will fail
without this new APAR in place.

    Related Files and Output:
Error Message is contained in the Abort log created when the
      install process aborts.

Local fix

  • There is no true workaround at this time, except to temporarily
shorten the System Path so that ITM can add the entries it
adds. The size of these entries depend on the full path to the
    install directory and sub-directories "\bin", "\bin\dll".
"\InstallITM", and "\TMAITM6". The new PATH variable is shown
as part of the Abort log so the shortened path can be setup by
using that information. Once the install completes the System
Path can be restored to it's original value and the ITM values
    added to the end.

Problem summary

  • Windows 2008 was detected correctly so the path was restricted
to 1023 characters. The install failed with an error message
about PATH being limit exceeded. This same error would occur on
Windows 7 and any Server based on Windows 7.

Problem conclusion

  • Solution was to check for OSMajor release greater than 5 and if
found extend the PATH limit from 1023 to 2047 characters. By
checking for OSMajor greater than 5 the fix should also support
Windows 7 and any Server based on Windows 7 as well as Windows
    2008.

The fix for this APAR is contained in the following maintenance
    packages:

Temporary fix

Comments

  • Temporarily reduce the system PATH to something less than 975
bytes until IBM Tivoli Monitoring is installed. After IBM
Tivoli Monitoring is installed, add the values added to the end
of the PATH by IBM Tivoli Monitoring to the original PATH and
    save the new value.
