Error description

    Environment:
    Windows only and only on some machines. This failure does not
    occur on every Windows 2003 SP2 64-bit machine or other Windows
    platform, it only occurs on some Windows machines.  ITM Release
    that was being installed was ITM 6.2.1 GA.
    
    
    Problem Description:
    Java 1.5 SR5 fails to install with error message failed to
    open web start configuration file. This is a known bug in the
    Java installer and has been corrected in SR7 and above. SR9 was
    tested by the customer as requested by the Java L3 team.  This
    is a request to upgrade the current Java SR5 to a later release
    of Java, for example SR9. Internal defect 87064 indicates there
    are problems with any Java 1.5 release past SR7. So this
    internal defect must be corrected before Java 1.5 SR9 can be
    implemented.
    
    
    Detailed Recreation Procedure:
    Install Java using GUI install. Execute the IBM...exe file in
    the ITM CD Windows\InIBMJRE directory. If it fails with the
    indicated error message, install a later release of Java. SR9
    was suggested by the Java L3 team and that corrected the install
    problem for the customer. This error may not occur on every
    Windows platform.
    

Local fix

Problem summary

  • Java fails to install and causes ITM install to fail. When
    installing  Java 1.5 SR5 in GUI mode it fails to install with an
    error message pop up: "Failed to open web start configuration
    file". The error is a known bug in the Java installer and has
    been corrected by upgrading Java to SR9.
    

Problem conclusion

  • To correct the Java installer, SR7 or above was required. This
    also required new security policy files. These have also been
    updated to be compatible with Java 1.5.0 SR9.
