IV78556: PROCESS CPU UTILIZATION PERCENTAGES ARE NOT NORMALIZED TO THE NUMBER OF ONLINE PROCESSORS.

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Process Busy CPU (Percent) and most of the other CPU utilization
related attributes in the Linux Process attribute group are not
normalized to the number of online processors.
Only Process Instant Busy CPU (Percent) is normalized. This APAR
aims at introducing an environment variable to allow the choice
of a coherent behavior for all of these attributes. Defaults
    will remain unchanged.

Local fix

  • Split situation into multiple situations, one for each possible
value of Number of Processors Online in the Machine Information
    group.

Problem summary

  • Incorrect percentages of CPU time consumed by Linux processes

The Monitoring Agent for Linux OS may report incorrect values
for the following attributes in the Linux Process attribute
    group, when they exceed 100%:
Process System CPU (Percent), Process User CPU (Percent),
Cumulative Process System CPU (Percent), Cumulative Process User
CPU (Percent), Process Busy CPU (Percent) and Cumulative Busy
    CPU (Percent)
These attributes can exceed 100% on servers with multiple online
processors. Also, these attributes are not normalized to the
number of online processors, thus preventing 100% to be
exceeded, whereas other CPU-related attributes in this group are
normalized. In order for this APAR to be properly implemented
in your environment, a new environment variable has been added.
See the "Install Actions" section of the APAR conclusion for
    more details.

Problem conclusion

  • Install Actions:
    ----------------
A new environment variable introduced to enforce normalization.
Default behavior is unchanged. Set KLZ_PROC_CPU_NORMALIZE=True
    in lz.ini configuration file.
