IV52123: SITUATION W/ UNTIL 'SIT' CLAUSE WILL NOT OPEN

IBM Tivoli Monitoring 6.2.3 Fix Pack 5 (6.2.3-TIV-ITM-FP0005)

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• For Situation A where Situation A defines it be closed when
  Situation B is TRUE, per UNTIL clause, the following scenario
  can occur.
  
  At interval N :
  
  1) Sit A evaluates as TRUE and thus moves to 'open' state
  2) Next, Sit B evaluates as TRUE, thus it moves to 'open' state;
     Sit A now moves to 'closed' state, as directed per
     UNTIL Sit B is TRUE
  3) At some point, Sit B becomes FALSE, thus Sit B moves
     to 'closed' state
  4) from this time forward, for intervals N+1, N+2, ...
     Sit A will never move from 'closed' state to 'open' state
     even though it evaluates to TRUE.
  
  This incorrect behavior by TEMS Situation Monitor was introduced
  in ITM 6.23 FixPack 4 and ITM 6.30 FixPack 2.
  

Local fix

• There is no graceful work-around; only remediation is to
  uninstall the offending FixPack.
  

Problem summary

• Situation with UNTIL clause will not open. For Situation A,
  where Situation A is defined to close when Situation B is TRUE
  per the UNTIL clause, the following scenario can occur:
  
  1) Situation A evaluates as TRUE and thus moves to open state.
  2) Situation B evaluates as TRUE and thus moves to open state.
  Situation A now moves to closed state, per the UNTIL clause.
  3) Later, Situation B becomes FALSE and thus Situation B moves
  to closed state.
  4) From this point on, Situation A will never move from closed
  state to open state even though it evaluates to TRUE.
  

Problem conclusion

• Changes were made to the logic to eliminate this incorrect
  behavior.
  NOTE: This does not affect situations that use UNTIL form, only
  UNTIL.
