IV47611: PASSWORD PROMPT FOR TEMS RECONFIGURATION.

IBM Tivoli Monitoring 6.2.3 Fix Pack 5 (6.2.3-TIV-ITM-FP0005)

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• In 6.23.03.00 under APAR IV31241, the code was changed
  to prompt for the root password as needed when the TEMS
  is reconfigured (itmcmd config -S -t <tems> -r). However,
  the prompt also occurs when a silent reconfigure (itmcmd
  config -S -t <TEMS> -r -y) is requested.
  
  RECREATE INSTRUCTIONS:
  Do the following as a nonroot user:
  1. Install the TEMS.
  2. Configure the TEMS
     - Specify "1" for "Security: Validate User ?" prompt.
     - Use defaults/appropriate values for others.
  3. When prompted for root password ("TEMS User
     Authentication"), use Cntrl-C to stop the configuration.
  4. Invoke the following command:
     CANDLEHOME/bin/itmcmd config -S -t <temsname> -r -y
  
  The same "TEMS User Authentication" prompt for root password
  results, even though the -y command option is specified.
  

Local fix

• Run the configuration in interactive mode either
    a) as root or
    b) as a nonroot user
  and specify the root password when prompted.
  You should only have to do this once.
    After the TEMS User Authentication work is complete,
  subsequent silent incantations should not prompt for the root
  password.
  

Problem summary

• On UNIX or Linux, the silent reconfigure of the management
  server requires user interaction. The command "itmcmd config -S
  -t <TEMS> -r -y" should exit with an error when run as a
  non-root user in a secured installation (locked by secureMain),
  but instead the command prompts for root password.
  

Problem conclusion

• The command to reconfigure the management server silently no
  longer prompts for root password when run as a non-root user.
  Instead, the command exits with an error explaining the user
  must have root privileges.

• Run the configuration interactively either as root user or as a
  non-root user, entering the root password when prompted.
