Error description

  • When trying to upgrade NT agent from 6.2.2FP2 to FP4 customer
    sees popup "Another version of this product is already
    installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To
    configure or remove the existing version of this product, use
    Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel. {GUID}." This may
    also occur on other upgrades of other agents within the same
    GUID family.
    
    
    Customer installed initial version of the NT agent locally and
    left the install directories around. The Microsoft Installer
    finds this installation and issues the above popup.
    
    
    Recreate Instructions:
    This error cannot be recreated on many machines, but it is
    solid on those that demonstrated the problem.
    
    1. Copy the NT Agent locally to the C: drive or other local
    drive
    2. Install the NT agent from that drive in GUI mode.
    3. Use tacmd updateagent to attempt to upgrade 6.2.2 FP2 to
    6.2.2 FP4 or later.
    
    The deploy may fail or hang. Use taskkill /IM setup.exe /T to
    kill the hung setup.exe.
    On a system with the patch installed, the install will run to
    completion.
    

Local fix

  • Search the registry for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products for
    SourceList. Then open the Net key under SourceList. Use the name
    data pairs to verify if they are part of ITM. When they are
    found to be part of ITM delete or rename the directory so it
    cannot be found from the registry. Either way works. Once this
    is done, rerun the remote deploy to the target system.
    

Problem summary

  • When upgrading Windows OS agent from version 6.2.2 Fix Pack 2 to
    6.2.2 Fix Pack 4, a popup displays indicating the product is
    already installed.
    
    
    On Windows, the IBM Tivoli Monitoring installer may become
    confused when there are leftover files and registry settings
    from previous installations. As a result, the installer
    generates a popup, "Another version of this product is already
    installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To
    configure or remove the existing version of this product, use
    Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel. {GUID}". The remote
    deploy commands run this installer in silent (non-interactive)
    mode, so this interactive popup results in a failure to complete
    the remote installation.
    

Problem conclusion

  • Prior to running the installer, the remote deploy command now
    cleans up leftover settings from previous installations allowing
    the installation to proceed.
