IT30986: ORACLE RESTORE FAILS WITH ERROR "FAILED TO SHUTDOWN INSTANCE" FOR NON ENGLISH INSTALLATIONS

APAR status

Error description

  • During an IBM Spectrum Protect Plus restore of an Oracle
    database, the restore can fail with the following message:
    
        ERROR,...,[<IP address>] <DB Name>: <DB Name>instance
          disabled.
        ERROR,...,CTGGF0156,[<IP address>] <DB Name>: Restore
          failed: Failed to shut down instance
        DETAIL,...,CTGGF0109,[<IP address>] Completed restore
          operation in 2s  0 database(s) succeeded and 1 failed.
    
      This occurs because the language on the system is non-English.
      The IBM Spectrum Protect Plus agent is expecting a response
      in English, but receives the shutdown in non-English. Since
      the agent is unable to recognize the shutdown output the
      restore fails.

Local fix

  •   As a work around, the system being restored can be
      shutdown prior to performing the restore. However, any
      reboot that occurs during the restore process the IBM
      Spectrum Protect Plus agent will not be able to recognize
      the response from the non-English system.
