APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When using IBM Spectrum Protect Plus to backup an Oracle
database, the backup job ends with FAILED or PARTIAL status.
The following errors are seen in the job log:

"Cannot mount volume <path> because the mount point is in use."

"Failed to perform backup of db <name> on application server
<server>: Failed to mount backup destination"

These errors occur when the previous run of the backup job
had completed successfully but was unable to unmount the
backup target volume at the end of the job.

Local fix

  • Make a note of the <path> mentioned in the error message
indicating the mount point is in use. On the Oracle server
run the following command to manually unmount the path, then
    retry the backup job.

    umount -f <path>

Problem conclusion

  • When attempting to mount a backup volume, the Oracle Agent uses
a mount point path that is unique to each backup volume. If the
mount point is already in use because of an unmount failure
during the previous backup job, the agent mistakenly reports an
error. The problem has been resolved by improving the mount
point check logic. If the mount point is in use by the same
volume whose mount is being attempted, the agent proceeds
    without reporting an error.
