Error description
Problem description: The built-in servermon component may not collect diagnostic information from the Spectrum Protect Server. As a result, the diagnostic logs couldl be empty Symptom: Starting from version 8.1.7, there is now an internal servermon component which, by default, will collect all servermon data within a directory called srvmon within the instance home location. The output files to collect the data are then copied to a subdirectory with the date, time and servername configured. The following are an example of the "..-show.txt" files created with 0 bytes in size : -rw-r--r-- 1 tsmsrv15 tsmsrvrs 0 Mar 15 13:18 20190315-13:22-00000000-10min-show.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 tsmsrv15 tsmsrvrs 0 Mar 15 13:28 20190315-13:32-00000000-10min-show.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 tsmsrv15 tsmsrvrs 0 Mar 15 13:28 20190315-13:32-00000000-20min-show.txt This is caused by the server process (dsmserv) running in the background with the -q (quiet) option. Spectrum Protect Versions Affected: IBM Spectrum Protect Server (Linux, AIX) Initial Impact: Low Additional Keywords: TSM "SPECTRUM PROTECT" servermon monitoring TS002024597 zero
Local fix
Manually re-configure the Spectrum Protect Server to start without using quiet mode (-q) and restart the server. Examples: AIX: update the script /etc/inittab line: ttsminst1:2:once:/opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/rc.dsmserv -u tsminst1 -i /tsm/tsminst1 -q >/dev/console 2>&1 # Tivoli Storage Manager to: ttsminst1:2:once:/opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/rc.dsmserv -u tsminst1 -i /tsm/tsminst1 >/dev/null 2>&1 # Tivoli Storage Manager Linux: update the script /etc/init.d/tsmserv line: $serverBinDir/rc.dsmserv -u $instance_user -i $instance_dir -q >/dev/null 2>&1 & to: $serverBinDir/rc.dsmserv -u $instance_user -i $instance_dir >/dev/null 2>&1 &
