Error description

  • When forcing a rebase (Full backup) of a VM in IBM Spectrum
    Protect Plus,
this can fail with the following pop-up:

    PolicyInvalidOptionVMNameException
Invalid VM name in Force Base Resources.

This problem can occur for several reasons which need to be
    addressed with more
    meaningful information:

1 - The VM does not have an initial base (full) backup.
       - Messaging should be changed to provide additional details
    on why the failure occurred.
2 - Quotes are used around a VM that contains spaces.
       - Guidance should be provided to show that quotes are not
    required around a VMNAME
even when the VMNAME contains spaces.
3 - After properly setting a VM for rebase, and then going back
into the options of the SLA,
the VMNAME does not show. Adding the same VMNAME again results
    in this same error.
This APAR is being used to address the following issue
    as well:
1 - Forcing a base backup results in "No previous backup, will
do full backup for VM (myVM)" which is an incorrect message.

    Versions affected: 10.1.2

    Keywords: TS001422908 SPP ISPP

Local fix

  • Do not use quotes around VMNAMES that contain spaces.

Problem conclusion

  • IBM Spectrum Protect Plus has been updated to perform user entry
validation for the text field used to enter virtual machine
names that are required to force base backups. If the user
enters in invalid names in the text field, these names will be
presented in the validation pop up dialog. The user can use this
info to correct the text field entries.
