Error description

  • Storing the clients encrypted password on a FAT formatted volume
    will result in a client crash; dsmc and dsm and dsmcutil are all
    affected.

    7.1.8, 8.1.2, 8.1.4 and 8.1.6 on Windows platform
    IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments:
    Data Protection for VMware version 8.1.2, 8.1.4 and 8.1.6
    on Windows platform
    IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments:
    Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V version 8.1.4 and 8.1.6
    on Windows platform

    8.1.6,

    Note 1: The Backup-Archive Client is a prerequisite to using the
    
    Data Protection for VMware version 7.1.

Local fix

  • On Windows the clustersharedfolder option can be used to
    specify the directory location on an NTFS formatted volumes in
    which to store an encrypted password file for cluster backup
    configuration.

Problem conclusion

  • The Data Protection for VMware data mover has been modified to
    not allow to store an encrypted password files on FAT/FAT32
    volumes because these file systems don't support permissions.
